Where people, nature and history meet and connect – Welcome to the Landesgartenschau Lahr 2018!
The Country Garden Show in Lahr will be open from April to October 2018. The attractive city is located in the centre of the region of Ortenau and is therefore well situated as an excursion destination for visitors from Germany, France and Switzerland.
What awaits visitors?
Magnificent gardens, tree-lined avenues, activity field areas accessible to visitors, children’s play areas, tranquil oases, allotments and a varied event programme every day. In other words, places where people can linger, relax and recharge, gain inspiration, and let their children play and run around. The show site, which is approximately 38 hectares in size and opening in 2018 with an exhibition, will boast three park areas with redesigned green spaces for visitors to discover:
The newly created lake here will have a bathing area specially for families and children, and is sure be a magnet on warm days. Anyone will be able to refresh themselves in the cool water or dig trenches galore on the sandy beach. The large lakeside terrace will also make it possible to enjoy the water element from very close by. The terrace will be embedded in its near-natural surroundings in an extremely appealing way, with a pine tree grove providing shade in the summer and a sense of comfort. The lake pavilion on the terrace will be an impressive structure in the Lake Park, while the small forest on one side of the lake is being given a new layout and will feature a lookout tower close to the water whose design resembles a bird’s nest. Those who climb to the top of the tower will be treated to a view over the lake that extends towards the city of Lahr and takes in the surrounding countryside. The expansive activity field areas will allow nature to be experienced in a completely new way. The main purposes of the Lake Park are nature conservation, nature experiences for visitors and local recreation.
In the Mauerfeld Citizens’ Park, a large games and sports park offering activities for all ages is being created alongside the Vicus City Garden and the Philosophers’ Grove. Dynamism and action are the focus of this park. As Roman strip houses once stood here, the park’s landscape architecture will be based on these. They are being reproduced in the form of rectangular groups of trees with treetops shaped like roofs. These groups of trees will line the Via Ceramica, which will be the central element of the Vicus City Garden. In addition, a faithful replica of a Roman strip house with a Roman garden is set to be constructed, so that visitors can immerse themselves in an age that ended many centuries ago.
The new bridge will be a key element of the whole project. An elegant arch, it connects the Mauerfeld Citizens’ Park and the Stegmatten Lake Park, and is a striking symbol of the country garden show at the same time.
In the Allotment Park next to the federal highway that runs past the show site, public areas will alternate with private areas. Gardening enthusiasts will be able to offer visitors an insight into their work here, and the allotments looked after by the show organisers will also provide a colourful range of ideas that visitors can incorporate in their own gardens. About 35 gardens are expected to be realised by the time the exhibition opens in 2018. The Allotment Park will be completed by small play areas and fields that visitors can walk through and relax in. A complete event programme including details of interesting events specially for our French visitors will be made published here before the exhibition opens.
